Stress Relief

Flowing with Ease and Grace
In Part I of this series we briefly explored the Stressed Out Lifestyle. Part II applied a simple concept to gain a bit of altitude in observing your stressful situations. Looking at life as composed of three things, being, doing and having, (see the table below) provides an uncluttered foundation for exploring stress in your own life. Wally Minto, author of the Alpha Awareness Results Book, shared this idea with me in 1981 and I've adapted it for cultivating the power of personal peace. Part III addressed the benefits of giving yourself time for simply "Being," Part IV related to prioritizing your "Doing," and Part V, examined how to simplify your "Having" for greater stress relief.

In Part V, I suggested a rearrangement of our table, moving Peace, Love, Joy and Truth from the "Having" column to the "Being" column where they really belong as qualities intrinsic to your essence. This article, Part VI, will tie everything together with a bit of philosphy and a few more practical ideas for stress relief.

Start with Being for Stress Relief

While it seems to go against the flow of action in contemporary life, it is actually more natural to start with being and allow the doing and having to flow from your state of being. You've been well trained to do it the other way around and now, all stressed out, frazzled and frustrated, you might be motivated to try turning inside first for stress relief!

Remember that you are peace, love, joy and truth! Stress relief and considerable happiness can flow when you begin to give yourself space to remember by using techniques such as meditation, watching your breath, or just being quiet and still.

Pick some form of quieting your mind and begin to do it even for five minutes a day. With practice, you will come to appreciate these quiet moments and the answers that appear as a result. These quiet moments yield a quality of ease and grace that, with repetition, will bring wonderful stress relief to your lifestyle.

Stress Relief through Being Leads to

Your Power of Personal Peace
When you come to the ground of your being, whether through meditation and prayer, walks in nature, "sleeping on" your problems and honoring the guidance that shows up, journal writing, or "just sitting," you start to have the clarity and understanding that will help you make better choices. Stress relief is no longer needed because you're living in the power of your personal peace.

You'll see and be able to choose the paths that are wisest for your unique circumstances and your true heart's desires. You'll be clear on what are your genuine responsibilities. You can release any false sense of obligation, which will bring tremendous stress relief.

When your personal knowing of what is right and appropriate for you comes from that center of your being, it is much easier to cut out unnecessary activities and give yourself time for the things that are really important to you. Stress relief will appear almost as a by-product of your process.

Simplifying life becomes a natural process. It is no longer forced as when you try to "control" your life or use "will power" to attempt creating new habits. As you live from your center, from your essence, your stress levels will easily and naturally drop to healthy and manageable levels.

Once you have some practice at consciously "Being," you will find it easier to examine the other items in the "Doing" and "Having" columns. You can observe the status of your health, wealth, relationships and things, and start making choices that support your priorities. You can clear the clutter from your things with a sense of harmony and joy instead of confusion and dread.

You can let go of relationships - friendships you have outgrown, a marriage that bit the dust three years ago - with a sense of inner peace and an appreciation of the appropriateness of action even though there might be challenges in the process.

You can stop spending on things that are not real priorities, not your highest values, and build your financial wealth in a conscious manner. You can make choices for health with more natural loving awareness of the needs of your body, mind and spirit. Your stress relief will appear quite naturally as you put the pieces of your life together from the inside out.

Here is the short form reminder list of my strategies for

Stress Relief from the Inside Out
1. Breathe
2. Observe
3. Understand
4. Study your stressful situations
5. Remember you are peace, love, joy and truth
6. Make wise choices from the inside out
7. Take action to bring stress relief
8. Enjoy personal peace and greater fulfillment

Being, then doing, then having the positive results is a life-strategy for loving yourself from the inside out for greater personal peace and well-being.

It is a process of relative grace and ease. In short, remember to BE, then DO, and then you HAVE what you really need and truly value, in a natural flow that will bring stress relief with relative ease and grace.
