Stress Relief

A Higher Perspective on Stress
Let's look at life in a very simplistic way to gain a higher perspective on your challenges and stressful situations. For this purpose, we can view life as being about three things: being, doing and having. I first learned this simple concept in 1981 from Wally Minto, author of the Alpha Awareness Results Book. I've adapted his idea to my specialty of helping people find stress relief and cultivate the power of personal peace.

Consider the key qualities in each arena below. Obviously you can stretch some of these lists out ad infinitum, but the critical qualities as I see most people living them -- as related to stress relief -- are captured here. Add more if it makes sense to you!

Wishing for Stress Relief
You've probably noticed that you and most of your friends complain of stress in one form or another several times a week. It's chronic. It's happening in epidemic proportions. You're among millions wishing for stress relief!

Do you hear people complaining about stress caused by items in the "Being" column above? Not likely.

Do they grouse about stress from things in the "Doing" column? Oh, yes. And much of the doing is geared toward getting the qualities and things found in the "Having" column.

Do you find friends griping about stress caused by items in the "Having" column? Yes, but usually only if they think they don't have enough of these items! But people also experience stress from too many social relationships and obligations, and too many things leading to physical, emotional and mental clutter, distraction and overwhelm.

Again, this approach is very simplistic but offers you an opportunity to shift your outlook. You can start to observe from a higher vantage point with more objectivity or neutrality. This gives you a chance for a fresh start on planning your stress relief program.

The next four articles in this series address stress relief strategies based on Being, Doing and Having. In other words, we'll be discussing how you can create stress relief for yourself from the inside out, which is the theme of my book, The Power of Personal Peace: Reducing Stress by Loving Yourself from the Inside Out.
