The Stressed Out Lifestyle
How often have you felt so stressed you couldn't stand
it? And you went to bed and worried for a couple of hours, finally fell asleep,
then got up and did it all over again the next day? If this happens to you with
some regularity, here are some reflections on how to find stress relief and
reclaim your personal peace by going with the flow - from the inside out!
Here's the way most (stressed out!) people live life. Do you see
yourself in this picture, longing for stress relief? You might be largely
focused on managing the things of life - the cars, insurance, laundry, lawn,
bills, home, business, job responsibilities to keep the income flowing.
If you've been wishing for stress relief, you are likely caught up in
the external business (or busy-ness) of life. You may have ongoing challenges
like being a caregiver for a child or elderly parent with special needs. You're
juggling the needs and activities of several family members, social
obligations, and home maintenance.
On top of this, you may be dealing
with the major stress of a divorce, death in the family, job change, job loss,
or geographic move, or major health concerns.
On the other hand, you
may be screaming for stress relief because you're dealing with life's positive
stressors such as a wedding, a promotion, completing a degree, or raising a
dynamic family, or two or three of those elements at once. With your many
responsibilities, you hurry from one task and appointment to the next. You
often do two or more things at once - like talking on the phone while doing
chores or answering email. You juggle a bunch of activities and don't have much
time to sort out your priorities, much less program in some stress relief
time.
You probably don't get enough sleep and don't take much time to
play and relax. You may even get frustrated easily - irritated, annoyed, angry,
anxious, worried, all signs that you really need some stress
relief!
Health Problems Related to
Stress You may have or be developing stress-related health
problems and have not just a wish but a medical need for stress relief. Issues
(to name just a few) such as high blood pressure, changes in blood chemistry,
cholesterol, blood clotting, irregular heart beat and blood sugar levels have
all been linked to high stress levels and a need for stress relief.
Likewise, digestive problems such as esophageal spasms, ulcers, nervous
stomach and nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation and chronic
diarrhea show a strong relationship to stress levels. Headache,
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome, and back, neck and shoulder pain are
also frequently caused or made worse by stress.
Stress weakens the
immune system and people under stress have more respiratory infections, herpes
outbreaks, allergies and autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, eczema
and hives. Depression and anxiety are two obvious mental health problems that
overlap with and are affected by stress levels.
Addictive behaviors
such as alcoholism, drug addiction and eating disorders appear to get worse
with stress. Overweight and obesity can be caused or worsened by stress,
including eating to numb out loneliness or to "feed the hungry heart."

spelled out above, check out the additonal articles in this series for some
