Helpful Hints
for Meditation Part V: Meditation and Light Prayer

Meditation and Light Prayer Here are
some of my thoughts on a brief, universal form of prayer that can be useful as
you begin meditation (or any other activities in your life.) Remember that if
my words here don't fit for you, just substitute ones that are more meaningful
for you.
Requesting
the Light for Your Meditation Before doing each
meditation, I recommend using a brief prayer according to your faith.
If you don't have a particular prayer that seems suitable, or you'd
like to experiment a bit, you may try "requesting the Light," a wonderful
process that I first learned from an ecumenical church called The Movement of
Spiritual Inner Awareness.
If you don't consider yourself spiritual,
you may still want to ask for the Light in a sense of universal goodness. Or
you may skip these hints.
The Light as I personally work with it
means the universal Light of the Christ and the Holy Spirit, but not limited to
any particular religious expression. This can be as brief or as long a prayer
as you wish. My short form might be, "Light for the highest good for this
meditation."
A brief prayer might be to address the Divine in your
preferred form and then ask that everything that comes forward during your
meditation time be "in the Light for the highest good of all concerned."
I frequently ask for "Light" as I go through my day, for myself, and
for the people and situations around me. I'll inwardly say "Light," just the
one word, intending that the person or situation be blessed for their highest
good.
When I
ask for the Light, I trust that it is handled spiritually, instantly. I don't
need to know more about it, I'm not in control of anything, and I'm not trying
to fix, cure or rescue anyone. I'm simply trusting that there is a Divine
Essence that knows exactly what that person needs at this moment and I'm asking
for that kind of a blessing to be delivered, quite independently of me.
When I'm stressed, or looking for an answer to a particular dilemma, I
will also say inwardly, "Light, for the highest good," and see what shows up
next as my direction. (These are the really short forms!)
Insurance Clause for Meditation
and Life Asking for the Light for the highest good is my
safety clause. I may know, or think I know, what is best in a certain
situation, but I don't have the bigger picture, certainly not from a larger
Divine perspective.
By asking for the highest good, I'm saying, "OK,
Lord (or Spirit, or Divine Essence), you know best. I want what I think is best
or something even better, for the highest good for myself and anyone or
anything else involved. Your will, not mine. The ball's in Your court and I'll
do my best to accept whatever you bring forward here. I'll keep on doing my
best with whatever hand I'm dealt."
I know this prayer has protected me
more times than I can count. It goes with the old saying, "Be careful what you
ask for. You might get it."
