Meditation
Part
II: Basics
1. Have
fun learning to meditate or improving your practice! You don't need
to make this a serious or heavy task. You're taking up meditation, ultimately,
to help yourself lighten up and relax, or to gain greater spiritual awareness.
Let yourself approach this in a relaxed and happy way.
2. Meditate daily for at least five minutes, more if
you can. If you can work up to 15-20 minutes daily or even twice a day, you
will really notice the benefits. You can do meditation while seated quietly, (a
highly recommended format,) or you can chant silently while doing ordinary
tasks such as washing dishes, or while walking, jogging, etc. Please do not do
meditation practices while driving or operating heavy machinery as you can
easily enter an altered state of consciousness and would not be safe.
3. Arrange to be undisturbed. Set
up your meditation in a space where you can be uninterrupted for the time
you've allotted. Turn off the ringer on the phone, turn off your cell phone.
Tell others in the house you're not to be disturbed. Or plan your meditation
when your spouse can watch the children. Or do your meditation while your
children are napping, etc.
If necessary, wear earplugs and eye shades
to create a quiet environment. With practice, you can easily learn to tune out
distracting noises from the neighborhood or others in the household during your
meditation.
Take the attitude that these distractions are just part of
life. Accept them. Don't resist and rail against them as that will magnify
their distracting qualities.
When I learned to meditate, I lived in a
large block of flats in London, and invariablY, someone's burglar alarm would
be triggered, blaring ceaselessly for 20 minutes just when I sat to meditate. I
looked at this as great practice in maintaining my consciousness and inner
focus!
4. Falling asleep: People
today are so sleep deprived that often they quickly doze off during meditation.
I've always been told that if you fall asleep during meditation it will be a
deep and relaxing nap, and not to worry if that happens.
However, if
you have a tendency to doze off and you want a conscious experience, sitting up
or even standing throughout your meditation will help you stay awake.
5. Timing: Mentally suggest to
yourself that you will return from your meditation in a certain amount of time.
If you absolutely must, set an alarm clock, but this can be jangling.
6. Interruptions: If you are
interrupted by the phone or doorbell, and you feel you must answer, try to come
back to your meditation even for five more minutes after you handle the
situation. This will help alleviate that jangled feeling.
