Dear Friend, How many
times have you promised to take better care of yourself and get out of
stressful situations?
I know how it goes. Over ten years ago, I
struggled along as a county social worker, in one of the most demanding,
stress-filled jobs on the planet. The needs were so huge and the resources so
limited, I felt like I was pouring my energy into a black hole in space.
I cried every morning before going to work. I drove my health into the ground.
I still pushed myself to meet crazy deadlines and provide excellent work. My
doctor wanted me to take a temporary leave from work. I pushed on.
On the day I broke one of my prized
Wedgewood plates, backed forcefully into my brother’s car, and later
accidentally killed my precious 15-year old cat, I finally got the message. I
was stressed to the point that not only was my physical health seriously
compromised, my ability to function was slipping. I took a three month
disability leave and vegetated.
For the next three years, working part
time as a consultant, I focused on healing myself. In the process, I
learned enormously about how to manage stress. Having ruled out a number of
other job possibilities, I eventually went back to work at the same county
agency, to a similar position, but this time I knew how to take care of myself
and manage the external stressors. I thrived in this job, and was promoted to
another challenging (yes, very stressful) position. And I loved it. I continued
to take care of myself from the inside out in the midst of a mostly chaotic
work environment.
